Is the Xiaomi Mi 7 coming on May 23?

Xiaomi could unveil the Mi 7 on May 23 if a new official-looking poster is to be believed.

The poster looks real enough and features a burning 7 and the date May 23 along with the Mi logo, which usually adorns Xiaomi teaser posters. But the image isn't of very high quality and it hasn't been posted on Xiaomi's official Weibo account but is instead found elsewhere on Weibo.

Of course, that doesn't discount the information and the teaser as false. We're just advising caution at this point. The Xiaomi Mi 6 was announced a year ago in April, which puts the timing right on the money.

What we can gather from leaks and rumors about the Xiaomi Mi 7 is that it will offer a Snapdragon 845 and 8GB of RAM, an in-display fingerprint scanner and could quite possibly harbor a notch on top of its display.

Recently we saw a leaked screen protector, supposedly belonging to the Mi 7 and now we see a new one that looks similar.

Keep in mind that the internet is filled with screen protectors and this could easily be a sidelined product or one meant for a different phone.

We'll keep you posted if anything new comes up regarding the Xiaomi Mi 7.

Android 8.1 Global Stable ROM leaks for Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro will soon be officially bumped up to Android 8.1. Currently the phone is receiving the MIUI Global Stable 9.2.7.0 based on Android 7.1.1 - the same OS version it launched on in February.

But a MIUI Global Stable ROM 9.5.6.0.OEIMIFA firmware has leaked that brings the OS up to Android 8.1 and carries with it VoLTE support as well as Project Treble for faster future updates.

The new firmware is only available for manual flashing at the moment, but the official MIUI update schedule promises it will release it this month via OTA.

Weekly poll results: Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s found sizzling

How hot is the new Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s? “Very” is the answer. The comment section lauded it for the slender bezels of its notch-free display, although the LCD vs. AMOLED question was prevalent among commenters.

Everyone has preferences in that debate, but the Mix series has used LCD since its inception. And while it’s a pretty major upgrade, keep in mind that this is an “s” model so a complete overhaul was unlikely.

The new chipset and dual camera sure are appreciated, though. We’ll echo some of the comments wishing for an Android One version of the phone – MIUI is feature-packed, but some prefer to build up their phone’s software suit from the ground up by picking the apps they like rather than using the manufacturer-supplied ones.

Xiaomi Mi 7 confirmed to have in-display fingerprint reader

The in-display fingerprint senors are clearly going to be one of the trends of 2018. Major players on the mobile scene have yet to adopt it, but at this point, we're pretty sure it's a matter of time more than anything else. Things are lot more dynamic with Chinese OEMs who typically have shorter development cycles and less regulation and certification involved, so it’s hardly any surprise that Xiaomi is already jumping on the bandwagon.

The company's eagerly-anticipated Mi 7flagship could have actually been delayed in order to adopt the new technology. Evidence of this was recently found in a MIUI source code branch. Today, Xiaomi's CEO Lei Jun confirmed the feature in a Weibo comment.

The exchange in question happened in the comment section of a post, containing official Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s disassembly photos. Our Chinese is a bit rusty, but from what we can gather, one of the users jokingly mentioned the feature would appear on the Mi 7, which then Lei Jun confirmed in a reply.

To be fair, the whole discussion is rather light-toned and the revealing comment does appear to be immediately followed by a dismissal, of sorts. Still, evidence seems to be piling up and at this point it's more likely that the Mi 7 will have under-display scanner than not.

Other bits and pieces the rumor mill has to offer about the Mi 7 is a trendy notched display, likely measuring 5.65-inches in diagonal. Also, a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB of RAM and a starting price of around $475.

Xiaomi confirms April 13 as release date for gaming phone in invite

Today, a launch invitation confirms that Black Shark will be launching a new gamer-centric smartphone to compete against the likes of the Razer phone. This invite mentions April 13 as the date that the company will announce such a device in Beijing, China.

The company is actually backed by Xiaomi, so the device will likely feature the Black Shark branding and not Xiaomi’s. It will definitely be easier to spell and pronounce than “Xiaomi” in western markets.

Qualcomm’s logo is also on the invite so we will likely see a Snapdragon 845 inside this device. Other expected specs include between 6GB and 8GB RAM and between 64GB and 256GB of storage. We are also expecting a 120Hz display for a smooth gaming experience.

If anyone is waiting to purchase a Razer phone, you may want to wait until more about the Black Shark phone is revealed. We can pretty much guarantee it will be cheaper than the Razer Phone as Xiaomi is usually aggressive with pricing its products.

First Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s flash sale ends in minutes

Xiaomi announced the Mi Mix 2s a week ago and today the first flash sale of the flagship took place. Listed online at the Mi Store, all three variants in both colors went out of stock in just several minutes.

The phone is the first Xiaomi device with the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset. It also has a dual-camera setup at the back, where one of the snappers has large 1.4ɥm pixels and bright f/1.8 aperture, while the secondary shooter has a telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture.

Other new features of the Mi Mix 2s include MIUI 9.5 on top of Android Oreo 8.0 and Qi wireless charging support - a first on a ceramic device.

Another flash sale is planned for Friday, April 6. Prices start from CNY3,299 (€426/$530) for the 6/64GB variant and go as high as CNY3,999 ($516/€636) for the 8/256 GB model. All units come with a free wireless charger in the pack that otherwise costs around $15.

Xiaomi enters the gaming laptop market with GTX 1060 Mi Gaming Laptop

It seems Xiaomi is keen to produce every type of hardware you can think of, now adding a gaming laptop to its roster of devices.

The aptly named Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is the company's first foray into performance laptops - up until now Xiaomi has only made 12.5-icnh, 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch ultrabooks.

The Mi Gaming Laptop is a 15.6-inch device with a 7th gen Intel Core i7 or i5 CPU, a 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD and either an Nvidia GTX 1060 or an Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti. The more capable i7/GTX1060 model comes with 16GB of RAM, while the i5/1050Ti units will have 8GB.

Xiaomi heaped praise on the Mi Gaming Laptop's cooling system, saying it will be coolest high performance laptop on the market. There's even a hotkey for something called "turbo cooling". That cooling comes at the expense of weight - the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop weighs a pigly 2.7kg - that's quite a lot more than contemporary rivals from Asus or MSI.

Gamers will appreciate the RGB keyboard (with four customizable zones) and 5 programmable macro keys.

You'll be able to order the Mi Gaming Laptop starting on April 13 but it will be a mainland China exclusive at the start. The 16GB of RAM + GTX 1060 model will cost RMB 8,999 (€1150) while the 8GB of RAM + 1050 Ti model will be just RMB 5,999 (€770).

Xiaomi releases two video teasers for the Mi Mix 2S

Today, Xiaomi released a couple of video teasers showing off two of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S’s AI features. Both videos were posted to Weibo, China’s popular social network. Both teasers feature famous painters and their artwork. (Links to videos are at the end of this post)

The first teaser is a video montage set to the classical tune of Johann Strauss’ Voices of Spring and features the faces of artists like Van Gogh and an unlock symbol, suggesting that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S will feature facial recognition features regardless of whether the user is wearing a hat or a beard.

The other teaser features famous paintings and a corresponding symbol to signal a scene-recognition feature that would offer optimal camera settings for shooting a landscape, buildings, people, pets, and a waterfront.

Unlike the heavily leaked Huawei P20, we don’t know about the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in its entirety. It is expected to look similar to the Mi Mix 2 and will likely have a 6-inch 18:9 display with a near-bezel-less display sans the notch. It will, however, have a larger bottom bezel as revealed in the latest ambassador announcement.

The Mix 2S is expected to have a Snapdragon 845 CPU, 3,400 mAh battery, and a dual-rear camera system. The highest spec’d model may have 8GB + 256GB configuration and a teaser has recently confirmed that the phone will support wireless charging.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is set to be announced in Shanghai on Tuesday March 27.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s official teasers reveals no selfie camera on top

Xiaomi announced its brand ambassador for the upcoming flagship Mi Mix 2s. The company posted official photos of Wu Yifan, better known as Kris Wu, holding the phone. The photos immediately revealed the phone from the front, debunking rumors about a selfie camera in the upper right corner.

The bottom bezel is a bit thicker, meaning the new Mi Mix 2s will look very much like the existing Mi Mix 2.

In the same time Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun posted information on Weibo regarding the Mi Mix 2s launch in Shanghai on March 27. 10 lucky guests will win round trips to Paris to visit the Centre Pompidou in France, housing the largest modern art museum in Europe and .

The gift packs will also include a commemorative ticket, giving free entrance to Centre Pompidou where all three bezel-less phablets will be featured - the Xiaomi Mi Mix, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s will come with a Snapdragon 845 chipset. Latest leaked photo of stickers for retail boxes also reveal 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage, confirming previous rumors. Everything will be official next week when Xiaomi announce the phone on March 27.

Xiaomi Blackshark SKR-A0 spotted on GeekBench

Xiaomi seems to have a lot of exiting hardware in the pipleline at the moment. We are still anxiously awaiting the Mi Mix 2s, with its alleged next-gen full-screen display design. All the while another intriguing device is appearing on our radars every now and then. A recent GeekBench listing sheds a bit more light on the phone, designated as the Xiaomi Blackshark SKR-A0.

The benchmark report shows a Snapdragon 845 chipset and 8GB of RAM. The scores themselves are surprisingly high, even for Qualcomm's latest silicon. Insider sources claim this this is due to a new aviation-class cooling solution, to keep the CPU and GPU from thermal-throttling under load. That's just one one the many hints that the Blackshark SKR-A0 is the first of a new line of gaming-oriented smartphones, by Xiaomi.

Digging further into the matter, links Xioami and the device in question to a company called Black Shark Tech inc., which the Chinese manufacturer partially owns.

While not really in the smartphone business, Black Shark Tech specializes in some rather interesting OCR solutions and mobile camera research and development. This fits in nicely with rumors of a top-class DSP on the mysterious new phone, with some form of special sauce involved. Other than that, we can only assume the Blackshark branding rights come courtesy of the company. It's a cool name, no doubt and one that oddly matches up with one of Razer's gaming headset lines.

There is probably no connection there, though, since the Blackshark SKR-A0 could be a very direct competitor to the Razer Phone, which only recently tried to put a traditional PC gaming spin on the mobile market.

As for other intel about the Blackshark SKR-A0, there is also a recent AnTuTu listing that reveals some potential specs. Apparently, Xiaomi will stick with a 2160 x 1080 pixel display - lower resolution than the Razer Phone. That could be more beneficial to good performance and power efficiency. AnTuTu also mentions Android 8.0 for the Blackshark.

Xiaomi launches Mi Body Composition Scale

Xiaomi has launched the Mi Body Composition Scale in India. The device is designed to track various body stats when paired with the Mi Fit app.

The Mi Body Composition Scale looks like a standard weighing scale at first glance. The surface is made out of tempered glass with anti-slip finish for use with wet feet. It has a large LED display that lights up when you step on the scale and auto adjusts brightness to ambient light.

When paired with the Mi Fit app over Bluetooth (available for Android and iOS), the scale can show you your weight, body mass index, body fat, muscle mass, water percentage, bone mass, visceral fat, body score, basal metabolism, and more. You can create up to 16 profiles for multiple individuals in the household and it can automatically detect whether it's an adult or a child. The data can then be used to improve your workout schedule or just keep a track of your health.

The scale uses 4x AAA batteries (included) and can last up to 8 months with Bluetooth 4.0 LE.

The Mi Body Composition Scale is priced at INR 1999 ($30) and available online at Mi.com.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S will be announced in Shanghai on March 27

We knew that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is coming this month. We knew the when - March 27 - and now we know the where - Shanghai.

This latest bit of information comes via an official teaser (seen below) on China's Weibo. The teaser also features a glowing outline of a phone, but we can't gather anything from the shape.

We expect the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S to come with a Snapdragon 845 and up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It should have a 5.99-inch screen, just like the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2.

The back will likely have an iPhone X-esque camera module in the upper left corner.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s spy shot reveals the position of the dual camera - in the corner

Xiaomi’s Mix phones have always had stunning design but were lacking in the camera department – something that will soon change. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2spromises to bring a dual camera, though the rumors can’t agree on where that camera will be located.

An earlier leak put it in the center (with the LED flash separating the two lenses). This latest leak, however, shows a more iPhone X-like position in the top left corner.

Personally, we prefer the camera centered, but this is the exact same layout as the Redmi Note 5 Pro, which makes this the more plausible option. Unfortunately, this photo doesn’t reveal the fate of the selfie camera – the earlier leak had in in a corner notch (a previous leak wasn't too clear on that).

The Mi Mix 2s will be unveiled on March 27and will pack more upgrades than just a dual camera – Xiaomi was eager to tease the Snapdragon 845 chipset.

Xiaomi wants to enter the US smartphone market by the end of the year, or in early 2019

As you may know, Xiaomi has been doing quite well in the smartphone space with its devices that offer great specs for their prices. However, the Chinese company has only been officially active in a handful of markets so far. One of the biggest omissions has been the US, but that's about to change if a new report from the Wall Street Journal pans out.

According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, the company is looking to finally enter the US market either towards the end of this year or in early 2019. Unfortunately no more specific details are available at the moment, but he did say he's aware of the hurdles facing such a move - among which are adapting to American regulations and accommodating US customers' specific needs.

Xiaomi has had an online store in the USsince 2015, but so far it has only sold accessories and fitness trackers. Entering the US smartphone market makes perfect sense for Xiaomi, especially now when it's looking for new avenues of growth. Yet given what has recently happened to Huawei's push to sell smartphones through carriers in the US, it's likely that Xiaomi devices will be available over there only in unlocked form.

Top 10 trending phones of week 9

Samsung announced the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ and the duo snatched two of the top three places right away. The first dual-camera Redmi Note phone kept its high presence at second.

Our popularity contest has the Asus Zenfone 5z at fourth. The Taiwanese manufacturer announced the phone at MWC 2018 with a notch at the display's forehead and a dual camera on the back. The top 5 is wrapped up by the past year’s flagship Galaxy S8.

HMD Global plays the nostalgia tone at the Congress in Barcelona. Although Nokia 8110 4G feature phone surely looked promising, the Nokia 8 Sirocco gathered massive interest in the chart.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, also known as Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in China, makes company to the Xiaomi Mi A1 at the lower part of the table. Another MWC-announced phone, the Nokia 7 Plus, sits at ninth and the chart is wrapped up by the midranger Galaxy J7 Pro.
