Samsung Galaxy S9 sales fall short in South Korea

According to a report from South Korea, sales of the Samsung Galaxy S9 duo have disappointed.

The report pegs total Galaxy S9 sales in Korea so far at 707,000, down from nearly 1 million units sales figure that Galaxy S8 saw during its first two months in the market.

A month-by-month breakdown reveals 476,000 Galaxy S9 series units were sold in March, but the number came crashing down to 231,000 in April.

The story was the same for Apple, with the iPhone X also witnessing dip in sales. Around 475,000 units of the device were sold in the country in the first four months after the handset's November launch, with February only seeing 70,000 sales.

"Considering there were no new phone launches by its competitors, including Samsung, 70,000 unit sales per month is considered extremely low," an official working with a local telecom company said.

Samsung Galaxy S9 (dual SIM) going for $660 in US

If you are in the US, and are looking to purchase a dual SIM variant of Samsung's Galaxy S9smartphone, here's a deal for you: a Top Rated Plus eBay seller is offering the device for $660.

Keep in mind the variant on offer is global one, meaning it comes with the Exynos chipset (US models, in case you aren't aware, are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC).

List of color options include black, gray, purple, and blue, but currently only the black model is available (all other are out of stock). There's no information on when the deal ends, and as for availability, the list just says "limited quantity available."

First Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo render appears

Recently we learned the mysterious SM-J720F phone is actually going to be called Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo and is bound to arrive in India. Today, the first press render of the phone popped up, showing a fairly standard standard Galaxy J series design.

The front panel of the Galaxy J7 Duo hosts a standard 16:9 screen, a physical home key below and capacitive buttons in the newer Samsung Experience designs. The selfie camera is coming with an LED flash for all the selfies in low-light environment.

Looking on the left side there's no Bixby button, with Samsung seemingly reserving that for its flagship Galaxy S series. Bixby is still coming though as shown by a leaked manual. Other rumored specs of the Galaxy J7 Duo suggested Exynos 7885 SoC, 3 GB RAM, Android Oreo and dual cameras on the back.

Oreo powered Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 edge, A5 (2017), and A3 (2017) get WiFi certified

Now that all of the last year's Samsung flagships have started receiving Oreo, the South Korean company seems to have shifted its focus to the next batch of devices that will get the update.

The batch will likely include the Galaxy S7/S7 edge, Galaxy A5 (2017), and Galaxy A3 (2017), as all of these devices has been spotted on the website of WiFi Alliance with Android 8.0 on board.

A WiFi certification usually indicates the update roll out preparation is in last stages. While there's currently no official information on exactly when the update will arrive, leaks and rumors so far have suggested April roll out for the Galaxy S7 Oreo update and May roll out for the other two devices.

Samsung Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+ launch markets confirmed

Recently Samsung SM-A600FN and SM-A605G surfaced on Geekbench earlier, pointing to the a Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+ smartphones being prepared for a launch. According to SamMobile, the Korean company will indeed launch these devices, but only at three markets - Europe, Russia, and Middle East.

The Samsung Galaxy A6 is reportedly coming with Exynos 7870 chipset, seen in the Galaxy A3 (2017) and some phones from the more affordable J series. The SoC is coupled with 3 GB RAM and is running Android 8.0 Oreo, most likely with Samsung Experience UI 9.0 on top.

The Galaxy A6+ was shown with Snapdragon 625 and 4 GB RAM on Geekbench, which is a surprise, since Qualcomm chipsets are not common for Samsung phones outside the US. The first phone in more than two years to sport a Snapdragon became the ultra-affordable Galaxy J2 (2018) that arrived in stores in the opening days of 2018.

Pricing is obviously going to vary from market to market, but we are expecting the Galaxy A6 phones to be positioned in the lower spectrum of the midranger segment, as hinted by their year-old chipsets.

US Samsung Galaxy Note8 units to get Oreo in coming weeks

Samsung has confirmed that all eligible Galaxy Note8 (as well as Galaxy S8/S8+) units in the US - including unlocked ones - will get the Oreo update in the next 2-3 weeks.

The confirmation came in the form of a post from a Samsung moderator on the company's official US forum.

Sadly, they didn't reveal an exact date when the roll out would begin. While the Galaxy S8 Oreo update has already been rolled out by many US carriers, the Galaxy Note8 is yet to receive it in the region.

Samsung Galaxy Note9 likely to feature in-display fingerprint sensor, report says

Last we heard, KGI's research analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the Samsung Galaxy Note9 will not come with a fingerprint reader under its display. Yet now a new report from Samsung's home country of South Korea is claiming otherwise.

The Korea Herald says the tech giant is likely to go for an in-display fingerprint sensor on this year's Galaxy Note series smartphone.

"Samsung Display has prepared three or four solutions for Samsung Electronics to embed the fingerprint sensor inside of the main display, and both are seriously considering one of the solutions," the media cites one of its sources.

It further says the delay in zeroing on one particular solution is "due to the work in adopting the in-display fingerprint sensor," adding that a final decision on the matter is expected sometime this month.

Having the fingerprint reader under the device's display would make room for a comparatively larger battery, and presumably that's what Samsung is aiming for in Galaxy Note9.

Three new Samsung Galaxy J phones spotted ahead of launch

A month after patenting Galaxy J3 Star and Galaxy J7 Star, Samsung expands its celestial patent portfolio with two new entries. The Korean giant received a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the names Galaxy J3 Orbit and Galaxy J7 Crown.

In the same time, the highly rumored Galaxy J8 2018 is closer to a launch after a device with product number SM-J800FN was just certified by Wi-Fi Alliance. The phone will use a/b/g/n band connectivity, while earlier specs suggested Exynos 7870 chipset with an octa-core CPU.

Samsung’s own understanding of the always-expanding universe is bringing more and more and more devices to its Galaxy J series. We already saw the J2 Pro go officiallast month and we also saw benchmarks of an upcoming Galaxy J4 and Galaxy J6.

The trademark listings of the J3 Orbit and J7 Crown do not reveal anything about the exact devices, but we should expect Android Oreo, Exynos chipset and an affordable price tag.

Samsung Galaxy S9 ARCore support coming soon

Google's ARCore SDK currently doesn't support Samsung's latest flagship smartphones - the Galaxy S9 and S9+. However, that's going to change soon. As per a member of Google AR team, support for these devices is coming soon.

Here's exactly what they said:

Support for the S9 and S9+ will be added in the next release, which should be released in the coming weeks.

In case you aren't aware, ARCore is Google's answer to Apple's ARKit. It's aimed at enabling augmented reality experiences for existing and upcoming Android smartphones without the need for any additional hardware.

The ARCore SDK preview was announced by the company back in August last year, and it recently came out of preview with version 1.0.

New app lets you experience features of Galaxy S9/S9+ on your own phone

Just like it did for the Galaxy Note8, Samsung has released a demo Experience app for the Galaxy S9/S9+. As the name suggests, the application lets users experience features of Galaxy S9/S9+ through their own phone.

There are four main sections - New Camera & More, S9 Accessories, Helpful Applications, and Device Specifications. Each section contains relevant information, either in the form of videos or text & images.

So if you are planning to purchase any of these new flagships but want to get a feel of the features the device offers before actually purchasing it, you can give the app a try. It's available on the Play Store, and is compatible with devices running Android 6.0 and up.

Top 10 trending phones of week 9

Samsung announced the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ and the duo snatched two of the top three places right away. The first dual-camera Redmi Note phone kept its high presence at second.

Our popularity contest has the Asus Zenfone 5z at fourth. The Taiwanese manufacturer announced the phone at MWC 2018 with a notch at the display's forehead and a dual camera on the back. The top 5 is wrapped up by the past year’s flagship Galaxy S8.

HMD Global plays the nostalgia tone at the Congress in Barcelona. Although Nokia 8110 4G feature phone surely looked promising, the Nokia 8 Sirocco gathered massive interest in the chart.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, also known as Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in China, makes company to the Xiaomi Mi A1 at the lower part of the table. Another MWC-announced phone, the Nokia 7 Plus, sits at ninth and the chart is wrapped up by the midranger Galaxy J7 Pro.
